There are a number of excellent Bible reading programs. Robert Murray McCheyne’s Calendar for Daily Readings and the Discipleship Journal Bible Reading Plan are both very good. Yet both programs have readings in four different parts of the Bible every day.
Other Bible reading schedules that give a chronological reading are also helpful, but often seem jumbled because of the way the books are intermingled. Furthermore, one does not get to the NT until October.
This reading schedule basically follows a canonical order alternating Old and New Testament readings (with the exception of the Psalms, which in this plan follows 1 and 2 Samuel, and the teaming up of Haggai with Obadiah). The reading divisions are designed to be as sensitive as possible to the natural sectional divisions in the Scriptures.
The alternating of Old and New gives a balanced and yet systematic reading for the year.
