Thinking About God

Our text this Lord’s Day is another glorious text, throbbing with life-giving truth.  Hebrews 10:23 says, "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope, without wavering, for faithful is He who promised" (my translation).

The text tells us something about God, "faithful is He who promised."  In order to hold fast, we need to know something true about God, in this case, He is faithful.  In order to hold fast, we need to know what the Faithful One has promised, in this case all the promises that are connected with the priestly ministry of Jesus (that’s a lot of promises!).

NT scholar Paul Ellingworth sums it up like this, “The basis for the believers’ endurance is the reliability of God’s promise…  The statement that God is faithful is self-evident and forms the basis and motive for the believers’ faithfulness."

So do you think about God?  Who He is?  What He is like?  Is it food for your soul and fuel for your faith?  Do you know His promises?  Do they govern your life and characerterize your faith?  In other words, is your faith actually marked by clinging to certain promises?

See you on Sunday,

Pastor Brian
